If this episode feels like a message or mirror, feel free to share it with someone who is looking to think about rest differently.
It’s time to unpack the myth that we’re indispensable at work. (‘Cause we’re not!)
In this episode of The Rest of Us podcast, host Dana Tenille Weekes talks about how we unintentionally contribute to unsustainable work environments by making ourselves irreplaceable.
If you have greater loyalty or obligation to your job than your career, loved ones, and, of course, yourself, then listen to this episode and begin to settle into who you truly are.
What You’ll Settle Into
- Ways to challenge your conventional wisdom of hustle culture and to rethink your relationship with professional identity and rest as liberation through Dana’s personal anecdotes and a reality check on “work-life balance.”
- Five thought-provoking questions to examine how you create unrest by making yourself indispensable at work.
Key Quotes & Insights
“I’ve attended funerals of colleagues where people purposefully sit in the last few pews so that they can quietly leave before the service is over because they have to take that 30-minute call. And the one in the coffin was the colleague at work at dawn and well past dusk.”
When survival mode is all we know, we don’t realize when it’s not serving us.
“The only workaholic I respect is my body.” Our health cannot be disposable.
If you cannot honor your self-commitments, then you do not honor commitments.
Sometimes, we are willing to fight and move mountains for people who are unwilling to help themselves. This is a sacrifice, not service. Don’t confuse the two.
